It’s that time of the year again! From February 10th through the 14th the whole city will be in the theme of Art Rotterdam Week, with the Art Rotterdam Fair at the center of it. I have visited Art Rotterdam week a couple of times, but this will be the first time I get to experience it as a ‘Rotterdammer’ and be surrounded by it for the whole week. I’m excited!
Art Rotterdam is an internationally famous art fair that invites the crème de la crème of the global art galleries to show their best artists. Don’t worry you don’t have to be a rich collector to get in, just buy a ticket and have the world of art at your feet.
It is definitely worth the visit because the fair is held in the beautiful van Nelle factory. This factory was build in the 1920’s in the style of ‘Het Nieuwe Bouwen’(translated the New Building); an architect movement that build from the philosophy ‘form follows function’. The huge building is completely white and has so many windows that every room and hall is filled with light. De van Nelle fabriek is Industrial property listed in the national register of historic monuments, and listed as an UNESCO World Heritage site. Since 2000 the factory is a home for a lot of businesses, start-ups and creative studio’s.
Besides the big art fair there are smaller events and pop up’s all around the city. Make it a weekend and visit OBJECT for Dutch Design and Rotterdam Contemporary for young current art. Can’t get enough? The whole city is filled with pop up galleries and art shows that transform Rotterdam in one big art show.
