The most famous bakery of Rotterdam is probably Koekela. No matter what the weather, there is always a huge line at the counter with people who cannot wait to get their hands on a brownie or a piece of their notorious carrot cake. And trust me, it’s worth getting in line for.
Everything Koekela sells is homemade from scratch with fresh ingredients and you can definitely taste that. They have a big team of bakers who work around the clock to bake muffins, brownies, caramel bars, chocolate cakes, cheesecakes, carrot cakes, apple pies; the works.
I love to order one of these sweets with really good coffee and sit at the reading table so I can look at all the people standing in line and all the pie boxes going over the counter. It’s always busy but with a cozy and homey vibe to it.
Although I love everything they sell here, the carrot cake is my all time favorite. Its soft and gooey but full of flavor and the cream cheese frosting has the exact right sweet-sour ratio. To top it all off they put these cute little carrots on there, made of colored frosting, making it the best looking carrot cake of the land. Luckily I’m not the only Rotterdammer loving this cake, because you can find Koekela’s carrot cake on many menus in Rotterdam.
So whether you need a birthday cake or just want to get a good cup of coffee, Koekela is the place to be.
You can find Koekela on the Nieuwe Binnenweg 79a
